The Final of the ICLR Weekly Law Reports Annual Mooting Competition was held on Thursday 20th March 2008 in the Old Council Chambers of The Law Society in London, a kind sponsor of the competition. This grand setting was the perfect backdrop for BPP Law School to argue their case against the University of Hull.
The Moot was extremely eventful with two judges from The Law Society, Mr Keith Etherington and Mr Michael Franks, overseeing the competition. This new approach gave the competition a dramatic edge as the judges worked with one another testing the knowledge of both teams by way of intense questioning. Both the teams coped tremendously well with the judges’ line of enquiries and remained cool under the pressure.
The audience, including our sponsors from SAHCA and Justis Publishing Ltd, watched in anticipation as the teams were put through their paces, keen to known who would take the shield, as the level of mooting was exemplary. Once the appellant had replied to the respondent the judges retired for a few moments to discuss the Moot, adding a theatrical flourish to this courtroom scene. However it was BPP Law School who took the lead with a well-constructed skeleton argument and confident approach to the case.
The Mooters were awarded their celebratory shields by Clare Noon, Editor of THE INDUSTRIAL CASES REPORTS, whilst our accomplished judges looked on. They were then presented with prizes of online subscriptions to THE WEEKLY LAW REPORTS by Simon Watson of Justis Publishing Ltd, before meeting Carl Woolf from SAHCA. The Mooters are also set to receive a publication prize thoughtfully sent to them by Cambridge University Press.
Following the Moot the guests were invited to enjoy canapés and a glass of wine whilst breathing in The Law Society’s grandeur. This offered the perfect opportunity for the Mooters to reflect on the event and celebrate their successes. The atmosphere buzzed with conversation and enabled students, lecturers and legal professionals to discuss the evening’s events.

We at the ICLR would like to thank everyone who made this competition such a success. Thank you to all the teams who took part in the Annual Mooting Competition and to their supporters. Thank you to both the judges, Mr Keith Etherington and Mr Michael Franks, who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the competition. Thank you to The Law Society for the kind hospitality that you offered.
I would personally like to thank our kind sponsors The Law Society Charity, Justis Publishing Ltd, SAHCA and the Cambridge University Press without whom the entire event would not be possible.

Our Aim
The
aim of the competition is to encourage all law students to try their advocacy
skills at mooting, not just those students with aspirations to be called to the
bar. As a registered charity and the publisher of the most cited and authoritative
law reports the ICLR is committed to the educational development of our future
lawyers. The competition is open to undergraduate law
students or CPE students.
Special thanks to Justis, The Law Society Charity, SAHCA, Cambridge University Press, for very
kindly sponsoring the competition and for all their continued support.
