OF "THE LAW REPORTS" AND "THE
WEEKLY LAW REPORTS" TO MARK 135 YEARS OF LAW REPORTING FROM 1865-2000
|
|
The
Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales
have now published 2 editions of a special issue of The
Law Reports and The Weekly Law Reports
that features ten of the most historic cases to have been reported since 1865.
The cases, which have been selected by the Editor and the Reporters, include Carlill
v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co from 1893 and Donoghue
v Steveson from 1932.
This collection
of 10 landmark cases has been published to mark the relaunch of both publications
in a new format for the 21st century, and to celebrate the achievments of the
Incorporated Council of Law Reporting of England and Wales since its inception,
nearly 136 years ago, in the 19th.
They were chosen from a long list of
nearly 50 cases nominated by the Council's own reporters. We hoped to reflect
in the final selection some idea of both the continuing relevance of certain older
cases and of the consistency of our approach over the last 135 years. |

copies of the book are being supplied to university and college law departments
for the use of students in many of the 100 plus countries which already receive
the Council's titles. Copies are also available to members of the public free

John Cobbett, The Secretary for further details.
Over the last year the
Council has responded to requests from the legal profession to reduce the time
between judgment and publication of law reports. With the aid of a substantial
investment in editorial systems, The Weekly Law
Reports now reports more cases and faster than
any other series. The performance of The Weekly
Law Reports is benchmarked against other titles each
week and a clear lead in reporting times and the number of cases reported has
been established. There has also been an improvement with the reporting times
of The Law Reports, which
publishes monthly selections of cases from The Weekly
Law Reports with the addition of the argument of counsel.
The Council is also the leading free source of current case law via the The
WLR Daily. This service carries summaries of potentially reportable cases
within 24 hours of judgment and now receives 100,000 hits per day. The site is
updated frequently with more reportable cases than any other free website.
