PRESS RELEASE - 21 March 2001
THE WEEKLY LAW REPORTS MOOTING COMPETITION 2001
Launched in Autumn 2000, The Weekly Law Reports Mooting Competition is fast becoming one of the premier mooting competitions open to undergraduates and CPE students in England and Wales. Open to students studying in London and Greater London for the first year only, the competition will be launched on a national basis in May 2001.
The Weekly Law Reports Mooting Competition is organised and administrated by The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales (The ICLR), with additional sponsorship and support from The Law Society Charity and The Solicitors' Association of Higher Court Advocates (SAHCA).
The main objective of The Weekly Law Reports Mooting Competition is to encourage the advocacy skills of future practitioners by encouraging the use of case law by students within a practical environment. Precedent set through cases heard in the House of Lords, Privy Council and the High Courts is second only to legislation in our legal system. It is therefore vital that the practitioners of tomorrow are familiar with, and understand how to use law reports in their legal careers. It is also becoming increasingly important that all students, not just those with the intention of pursuing a career at the bar, develop advocacy skills and confidence in their ability to argue legal points in a courtroom environment.
Over £18,000 worth of prizes are available in the competition and have been donated by The ICLR, Context Ltd. and Cavendish Publishing Ltd. Each entrant automatically receives a year's subscription to The Weekly Law Reports and the two students in the winning team will walk away with the entire archives of The Law Reports, The Weekly Law Reports, The Industrial Cases Reports and The Law Reports Digest, available on-line or on CD-Rom and worth over £6,000 to each student, courtesy of Context Ltd. These are fantastic prizes for law students, and would be coveted by any practising lawyer in the UK.
Twelve teams entered for the first year of the competition and we are now at the Semi-Final stages with The University of Essex, Middlesex University, City University and University College London all due to moot on 4 April 2001. The Semi-Finals are being held at the Law Society in Chancery Lane, and it is anticipated that Michael Napier, President of The Law Society and David McIntosh, Vice-President of The Law Society will be the judges for the evening.
The Finals of The Weekly Law Reports Mooting Competition are being held in Old Hall in Lincoln's Inn on the evening of 3 May 2001. The judge for the Final will be The Rt Hon Lord Justice Buxton.

The majority of our reporters are barristers although we do have a growing number
of solicitors who have joined us in the past couple of years. Our reporters are
required to be present in court for every case they report and the reports are
subsequently sent to the judges concerned prior to publication. Wherever possible
The Law Reports should be cited in preference to other reports as they are the
most authoritative and the official reports to the courts. - Practice
