THE BUSINESS LAW REPORTS will be published by ICLR, which for more than 140 years has been the leading publisher of law reports in England and Wales.
The ICLR was established in 1865 by a committee of judges and lawyers with a view to providing reliable reporting of judicial precedents. Then, as now, readers were confronted with a bewildering array of rival publishers’ offerings.
The ICLR’s publications are officially approved by senior judges. Its leading series, THE LAW REPORTS — comprising the Appeal Cases (AC), Chancery Division (Ch), Queen’s Bench Division (QB) and Family Division (Fam) reports — must by law be cited in court in preference for rival publications see: PRACTICE DIRECTION [2001] 1 WLR 194, Sup Ct
The ICLR also publishes THE WEEKLY LAW REPORTS (WLR), which offers speedy coverage of a broader range of cases than those ultimately included in the official Law Reports series, and the monthly INDUSTRIAL CASES REPORTS, which offers specialist coverage of employment law decisions.
THE BUSINESS LAW REPORTS (Bus LR), will be launched with a FREE issue in January 2007.
THE BUSINESS LAW REPORTS are being edited by Paul Magrath, a barrister called in 1982 (Middle Temple), who has been writing and editing law reports for 24 years, 13 of them spent with the ICLR. He was, until recently, appointed to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Downing St, the final appellate court for a large number of British colonial and former colonial jurisdictions, and has previously worked in all the divisions of the High Court and Court of Appeal. He has also worked widely in journalism, including ten years as law reporter and case summary editor for the Independent newspaper, and an occasional contributor to The Times law supplement and the Times Law Reports.
Mr Magrath will be assisted by two other barristers, Nick Mercer (Lincoln's Inn, 1994), who presently covers the Chancery Division of the High Court, and Brendan Wright (Gray's Inn, 1995), who covers the Court of Appeal, and who are both also employed by the ICLR as sub-editors. >>Learn more about the editors.
The Bus LR will cover recent decisions on a wide range of subject matters where they affect or may interest business students and professionals generally, including: Agency, Arbitration, Banking, Carriage of Goods, Commercial Leases, Commercial Law, Companies and Company Directors, Competition, Confidential Information, Conflict of Laws, Consumer and Fair Trading, Contract, Copyright, Crime, Damages Awards, Data Protection, Defamation, Insolvency and Winding-up, Insurance and Reinsurance (Non Marine), Negligence, Partnership, Patents, Sale of Goods, and Trade Marks.
Matters of employment law, such as Discrimination, Health and Safety, and Unfair Dismissal, will continue to be covered by THE INDUSTRIAL CASES REPORTS. Taken together, the two specialist series ICR and Bus LR will now offer complete coverage of judicial decisions of general business relevance.
